The human condition is to push until we run out. We can only go so far for so long.
Wine at a wedding is a symbol of celebration, joy, abundance. When the wine is gone, the celebration is on the brink of disaster.
What happens when they run out of wine and Jesus is present? His mother goes to him and says, “They have no more wine.”
“Dear, woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
Reading his response to her can sound kind of annoyed, but I don’t think that’s how he meant it. This is his mother, the woman who gave birth to him and he loved her very much.
We tend to go and go until we are exhausted. Somewhere along the way we run out of time, money, ambition or energy. Where is God in all of this?
The family is facing embarrassment if the family runs out of wine. Mary knows how much running out of wine will effect the celebration. And she knows that her Son has the power to fix it, however, she doesn’t push it.
Jesus is going for something deeper than providing wine for a wedding. This was mean to reveal His glory.
Water won’t change hearts and Jesus knows this so he turned it into the best wine.
This teaches us that in all of our lives, Jesus takes what’s ordinary and turns it into extraordinary. Jesus has no interest at all in living our best life now. He wants us to be transformed.
New wine-is a miracle. Changing water into wine is the first sign pointing to Jesus as the Messiah. (This one have been the perfect time to do the song New Wine. I think I need to learn that one for the future.)
Wine is a symbol of your life running out. Take what is ordinary and turning it into a sign that Jesus is the new wine.
We are empty. Jesus fills us with the best wine – abundance, hope, trust.
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” —Jeremiah 2:13
When we lack what we need, it’s an invitation to rely on Jesus. He didn’t come to offer a little more of what we’ve got. What he offers will always be there. He came to transform us.
Mary was just a young girl when the Angel came to her and told her she was going to give birth to the Messiah, she willingly obliged. She didn’t get invited to a lot of parties. But, this is her time to shine. Her boy is with her and he can fix this. She didn’t know how, but she told the servants to “do what he says”.

When you don’t know what to do, trust him. Do what he tells you to do!
Abundance comes as a choice. Get the refill Jesus offers.
The best is yet to come.
I used to think that Jesus did something special to that water to turn it into wine. But the scripture tells me that he told the servants to fill the jugs to the top with water. Then he told them to take a glass to the master of the ceremony and let him taste it. They’ll saved the best for last. Nobody does that! Who knew that this miracle had occurred? The servants and the disciples. This was the sign his disciples needed to see to know he was the Messiah!
So much goodness in this sermon! Thank you for reading my take away from my pastor’s sermons.
In Faith,
