It may seem like a strange thing to preach a sermon on, but stay with me and you’ll understand. Governments and the systems that run them are tools in the hands of God.

”For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.” —Romans 13:3-4
Paul wrote this scripture from prison. He’s explaining that the government has a god-given purpose. We shouldn’t be in fear from the government. Continue to do what is right and you’ll be commended.
Israel wanted a king like all of the other kingdoms, but God had other plans. However, eventually he relented and gave them what they wanted. He gave them King Saul. He was wanted by the people. So God gave him to them. He was very popular, but not a good king. God gave them what they wanted. Just like them, sometimes we get what we want instead of what is best for us.
If God is the ultimate authority, the government should be God’s tool. It’s meant to preserve and protect.
God is still on His throne and in control. He knows that justice is bigger than man.
We must follow God and have him lead us.
The government should protect the weak and be a force for good.
Systems create order. When someone doesn’t follow the system it causes chaos. Are we quick to thank God for the systems put in place to protect us? There bad police, parents, teachers, and bosses. For every bad one there are thousands of good people in those positions.
”He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. —Micah 6:8
The primary role of government is to seek justice. Government should be a reflection of God’s heart and character. The heart of God
The areas where we see justice being done around you are where the systems are working.
When governments are corrupt we need to stand up to make things better. We can do this in our own homes by talking about godly character in our own homes. Engage your children in conversations that help them see above the weeds.
God is in control!
Seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly.
There’s no excuse no to. God knows. His justice isn’t limited by government. Don’t fall into cynicism..
Pray for justice to come.
“Father, your will be done!”
What good do you see in the government systems? What do you see in justice and how can you respond in a way you see God? If you see injustice, what can you do about it?
Sometimes we get what we deserve! People and governments fail, God does not!
We’re okay because God’s got us. Pay attention to what He’s teaching us. He will overcome!
In Faith,
Pam
