THE LIGHT OF PEACE

We all want peace, but where can we find it? There will always be wars and rumors of wars. If that’s the truth, how can we ever have peace?

This blog post is my take away from pastor Jon Porter’s sermon on 12/8/24. It’s advent, a time when we celebrate the anticipation of the arrival of the Prince of Peace!

We can’t bring about peace on our own, but sometimes we try to fix things on our own. Perhaps because we aren’t sure that Jesus would fix it the way we want. We long for peace, but look for it in all the wrong places. We keep waiting for our circumstances to change, but it never seems to fall in place like we anticipate. We forget about turning to God.

True peace doesn’t come from fixing the outside. It comes from a steady trust. We must be anchored to something secure. God does this to our hearts even when we go through storms.

Jon told about watching a harbor master, the one who boards a ship specifically to bring it into the harbor. As he described witnessing this in a storm that tossed the ship and tug boat around, the harbor master timed his jump from one to the other. What gave him the peace to make that jump with only the comfort of having a life preserver on? It was the light that showed him exactly where he needed to jump.

It’s that way with Jesus, too. He gives us the gifts of salvation, forgiveness, and is our source of lasting peace. He doesn’t just offer peace, he is peace!

The harbor master just needs to see where he’s going. Take the next step even when we can’t see the whole path. The light will guide our way.

So, what’s the thing that will be the next right step for you in the circumstance that is keeping you from peace? “I was wrong.” “I’m sorry.” “Can you forgive me?” “What can I do to make this right?”

Jesus is like that. He gives us enough light to take the next step. We may be fearful and take a step in another direction.

Tell God what you need and you may be surprised at the answer he gives you because it’s nothing like what you were thinking. When you were asking for a cure, God’s fix was a new heart. Don’t be anxious! God’s fix is better than anything you could come up with on your own!

Peace is a daily choice. Talk to God. There is never a moment that he’s looked down and said, “I didn’t see that coming!”

THE SOLUTION:

  1. Anchor your mind to God’s promises. Spend time in prayer and scripture daily, even if it’s 5 minutes.
  2. Turn worries into prayers. Trust in God.
  3. Be the light of peace for someone else.

Peace comes from a perfect Savior

Let His peace overflow

See you Sunday!

In Faith,

Pam
