As we begin reading chapter 3, James is warning us that teaching is important, but the task should not be taken lightly. Why does he share this concern?
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
James 3:1
In the beginning of Christianity there were no books for teachers to use as a resource. They learned from the apostles who taught them about Jesus and his ministry. They had to commit the lessons and scriptures to memory so they could teach those who wanted to learn.
Now we have not only the Bible, but also commentaries, studies and devotions that we can access. We should be a light in the darkness for those searching for the truth.
The task to teach can’t be taken lightly though, because teachers will be judged more strictly because they have great influence. So, why would anyone even want to take on this responsibility? I think it’s part of God’s plan. If he calls us to it, he will prepare us.
More tomorrow about taming the tongue.
In Faith,
